DETROIT (March 14, 2013) – Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Gary A. Brown releases the following statement today regarding the appointment of an emergency financial manager for the city of Detroit.
“We've known for the past several years that the city of Detroit faced serious fiscal challenges and the likelihood of an emergency financial manager (EFM) was imminent if Detroit's elected officials didn't make the necessary bold fiscal reforms,” said Brown. “At times, we had the political will to implement reforms; however it was not consistent enough to fully address our cash flow, long-term legacy costs and debt obligations.
“Today, Governor Rick Snyder officially announced the installment of an EFM by the State of Michigan. In my view, the EFM will be empowered with the tools to assist in alleviating Detroit's long-term debt obligations, which will translate into the availability of resources to invest in quality city services.
“I believe that both the EFM and the governor genuinely want the voices of the mayor, city council and citizens to be present during this process, and I won't relent in a continued effort to represent Detroiters.
“My vision as an elected official does not change with this EFM appointment. Detroiters' biggest concern is public safety – an issue that keeps me awake at night. We will not be a thriving Detroit that retains and attracts residents and businesses until we improve public safety and educate our kids.
“It's time to end the disruptions that don't resolve our challenges, instead focus our energy on building the future of Detroit.”
